About Packaging Donckers

Packaging Donckers is a Belgian manufacturer based in Lier. They make cardboard cake boards, trays and boxes for bakery, patisserie and traiteur, and have been doing it since 1995.

They keep thousands of items in stock and can make them in the customer's own sizes and colours, printed with their logo. They only sell through wholesalers and never direct to bakeries, so they never compete with their own customers. They wanted more of those wholesale partners across Europe.

The challenge

Donckers had the product, the stock and almost 30 years of experience. What they needed was a steady way to reach new wholesalers in countries where nobody knew them yet.

  • The buyers are hard to find. Packaging distributors don't sit in one clean category in any database. On paper they look like manufacturers, machinery suppliers, co packers or even bakeries, so a standard list would have been mostly the wrong companies.
  • Nobody is looking for a new board supplier. Every wholesaler already buys cake boards from someone. There was no buying signal to wait for, so the email had to give them a reason to talk.

What we did

  1. Built the list from a lookalike.

We took one well run packaging wholesaler with its own catalogue as the model and found companies that look like it across European markets. Wholesalers and distributors in general, not only bakery packaging specialists.

  2. Checked every company with AI.

Each one was sorted into reseller, producer, packaging services or not packaging at all. Machinery suppliers, co packers, bakeries and food producers were taken out, so every email went to someone who could actually buy.

  3. Gave them a reason to meet.

The email said Donckers was planning a trip to their country to meet a few packaging distributors in person.

  4. Wrote a different message for resellers and producers.

Resellers heard that Donckers never sells direct to bakeries, so their customers stay theirs. Producers heard that cake boards need their own machines, so most producers buy them in instead of making them.

  5. Asked for a reply, not a sale.

No catalogue, no samples, no links. The call was suggested once someone showed interest.
